SkyDSL Internet Broadband Satellite Services
The
skyInternet Service
SkyInternet
makes it possible for the end customer to receive
data from the internet via satellite. The end
customer can use skyInternet to receive data via
satellite or to bundle his terrestrial connection to
the satellite connection thereby accelerating
reception of data. The end customer needs a
terrestrial internet connection for skyInternet in
order to transmit data, e.g. via ISDN or a modem.
The Priorities
While using skyInternet, the end
customer may choose between the priorities available
for the respective tariff. The end customer will
receive data with a higher bandwidth via the
satellite when choosing a higher priority. At the
same time the probability increases to reach the
maximum available bandwidth.
Typically the available bandwidth
in the chosen priority is lower than the maximum
available bandwidth, as this is limited further by
external factors, like capacity and connection of
the server from which the data is to be downloaded.
Otherwise, in case the available bandwidth would be
lower than a certain value, skyInternet regulates a
certain minimum for end customers by blocking access
to a priority until there is again sufficient
bandwidth available in this priority.
The Fairness
Policy
The lowest priced priority,
priority 1, is meant to be used for surfing mainly.
To download higher data volumes the higher
priorities are suited better, as they offer higher
bandwidths. To ensure this concept for all end
customers, a “fairness policy“ is applied in
priority 1 that causes a limitation of end customers
that do not behave fair (i.e. use the service
excessively) in such a way that other users behaving
fairly are impacted less in this priority.
SkyEmail Service
The
skyEmail service enables end customers to receive
e-mails without any Internet connection (offline),
as long as their PC is ready to receive. skyEmail
informs the end customer in real time about new
e-mails received via satellite. No dial-up
connection is needed for this service and therefore
no additional costs are incurred. The end customer
activates and administrates her/his skyEmail account
via the SkyDSL Customer Site. . Offline reception of
the skyEmail service is possible only with such an
account.
For each end customer one mailbox
with 60 MB of storage space is available on the
skyEmail server. 30 days after being received by the
skyEmail server a skyEmail will be deleted
automatically regardless of the storage capacity of
the mailbox. The skyEmail service uses encryption
when transmitting offline for extra security.
SkyRFD
Service (Request for Download)
The skyRFD service is an ordering
service for downloading files offline. skyRFD
transmits the ordered files offline to the PC of the
end customer, as long as the PC is ready to receive.
The end customer activates this service by himself.
To use it, he needs an Internet connection.
skyRFD supports the FTP and HTTP
protocols. It is not possible to request files from
servers that do not use these protocols. The length
of time taken to receive the requested data varies
according to a number of factors, including the
number and size of files requested. It may take up
to some hours.
Channel
Bundling
Channel Bundling is a feature
that bundles the satellite channel and the
terrestrial dialup channel. If the feature channel
bundling is enabled on the PC of an end customer the
SkyServer will add the terrestrial line
automatically to the satellite channel whenever the
maximum available bandwidth of the end customer
would fall below a certain predefined value, thereby
increasing the available bandwidth for the
respective end customer.
After installation of the SkyDSL
software channel bundling is enabled by default.
This feature can be enabled or disabled by the end
customer in his/her system. |
